Cyrillic Keyboard Online: Type Bulgarian Without Installing
A Cyrillic keyboard lets you type Cyrillic letters on a Latin keyboard. This online version is set up for Bulgarian: each key types the Bulgarian letter that sounds alike (d = д), using the phonetic layout. It covers all 30 Bulgarian letters plus ѝ, with no Russian-only letters, and needs no installation.
A Cyrillic keyboard lets you type Cyrillic letters, and the one above is set up for Bulgarian. It works in your browser: type on your normal keyboard and each Latin key turns into the Bulgarian letter that sounds the same. Nothing to install, no settings to change, and a copy button when you are done.
It is the fastest way to write a message, search for a Bulgarian place name, or fill in a form when you are on a borrowed computer. If you type Bulgarian every day, installing a system layout is better; our Bulgarian keyboard guide covers Windows, Mac and phones.
How to use this Cyrillic keyboard
- Click in the text box.
- Type on your physical keyboard.
agives а,bgives б,sgives с, and so on. - Or click the on-screen keys with a mouse or finger.
- Hold Shift for capitals, as usual.
- Press the copy button and paste the text into email, chat or a search box.
The layout follows the Bulgarian phonetic arrangement, the one many Bulgarians use on their own computers. So the habits you build here carry over if you install the layout later.
Letters with no obvious key
About two thirds of the Bulgarian alphabet sits on the Latin key you would guess. The rest needed a home, and these are the ones to memorize:
| Letter | Press | Sound | Try it |
|---|---|---|---|
| ж | v | zh, like “s” in “measure” | жаба (zhaba) |
| ч | ` | ch, like “ch” in “church” | чай (chay) |
| ш | [ | sh | шапка (shapka) |
| щ | ] | sht, like “sht” in “pushed tight” | щастие (shtastie) |
| ъ | y | [ɤ], close to “u” in “but” | ъгъл (agal) |
| ю | \ | yu, like “you” | юли (yuli) |
| я | q | ya, like “ya” in “yard” | ябълка (yabalka) |
| ц | c | ts, like “ts” in “cats” | цвете (tsvete) |
| х | h | [x], like Scottish “loch” | хляб (hlyab) |
| й | j | y, like “y” in “boy” | май (may) |
Two letters are worth a second look. Ъ is a real vowel in Bulgarian, not a silent sign, and it appears in everyday words such as път (pat) (road). Ь (on x) is rare: it only appears before о, as in шофьор (shofyor) (driver).
A Cyrillic keyboard for Bulgarian, not Russian
Many online Cyrillic keyboards are built for Russian. They look similar, but they put letters in different places and include letters Bulgarian does not use: ы, э and ё. If you type Bulgarian on them, you may end up with a Russian letter that a Bulgarian reader will spot at once.
This keyboard includes exactly the 30 Bulgarian letters, plus ѝ. That accented form is not a separate letter. It is the pronoun ѝ (“her” / “to her”), written with a grave accent to tell it apart from the conjunction и (“and”). Unicode encodes it as U+045D, CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER I WITH GRAVE, in the Cyrillic block (U+0400 to U+04FF), which also holds every other Bulgarian letter.

Practice words to type
Try these short words to get used to the layout. Each one uses at least one of the “hidden” keys:
- здравей (zdravey): hello (z-d-r-a-w-e-j)
- благодаря (blagodarya): thank you (ends with q for я)
- чаша (chasha): cup (` then [ for ч and ш)
- жълт (zhalt): yellow (v then y for ж and ъ)
- щастие (shtastie): happiness (] for щ)
- хляб (hlyab): bread (h, l, q, b)
Say each word out loud as you type it. Linking the key to the sound is what makes the phonetic layout stick. The pronunciation guide has audio for every letter.
Tips for faster typing
Learn the ten odd keys in two batches. First the sounds English writes with two letters: ж, ч, ш, щ and ц. Then the vowels and glides: ъ, ю, я, й and ь. Most people stop looking at the chart after a day or two of short sessions.
Type real words, not random letters. Street names, shop signs and song titles work well because you already know what they should look like. Read the result back before you copy it; one wrong key, such as y instead of j, changes май (May) into a word that does not exist.
Other ways to type Cyrillic without installing anything
- Phone keyboards: adding Bulgarian to the keyboard on iOS or Android takes a minute and shows Cyrillic on the keys.
- Character picker: Windows has an emoji and symbol panel (Windows key + period), and macOS has the Character Viewer. Both are slow for whole words.
- Unicode codes in Microsoft Word: type a hex code such as
0436and press Alt + X to turn it into ж. Useful for a single rare letter. - Convert from Latin: type a word in Latin letters into the Cyrillic to Latin converter in reverse mode, then check the result.
For anything longer than a sentence, the Cyrillic keyboard above is usually quicker than all of these.
Common mistakes
- Typing v for в. On the phonetic layout в is on
w. Thevkey gives ж, which surprises most beginners. - Typing y for й.
ygives ъ. Usejfor й. - Spelling sh, ch, zh as two letters. ш, ч and ж are single letters with their own keys. Typing
s+hgives сх. - Typing ya as two letters. я is one key (
q). йа is wrong. - Pasting into a Latin-only field. Some older forms reject Cyrillic. Use the official Latin spelling from the transliteration tool there instead.
